Sponsored by the Ocean Park Association, the second annual Santa Monica Fourth of July Parade begins at 9:30 in front of the Santa Monica Civic Center. The parade route goes south on Main Street from Pico, turns right on Marine heads north on Barnard Way to the southernmost beach parking lot to disperse. Spectators are welcome!!! The Santa Monica Malibu Council of PTAs has formed a Special Education Committee to help develop a supportive culture of inclusion for all students in our school district.

PTA President Rebecca Kennerly writes: “Please join us for our summer meetings. ...Priority agenda items for our first meeting will be selecting a chair and developing a mission statement. ...PTA Council is in the process of creating a special section on its website for this Committee’s work. In the meantime, all of the documents created by this committee will be archived at: http://smmpta.org/SPED/index.html. ...Please feel free to invite others you believe would be interested. Outreach to others in our communities is an important part of our work. I look forward to welcoming new members to our summer meetings.” Additional summer meetings are scheduled at the same address for Monday, July 28, 6-8 pm, and Monday, August 11, 12:30-3pm.

The Santa Monica College John Drescher Planetarium will present a very special feature show, twice in June, to help you kick off a summer of stargazing.

The Night Sky Show costs $5 ($4 seniors age 60+ and children age 12 and under). For the double-bill price of $9 ($7 seniors and children), you can enjoy both the Night Sky Show and 8pm Feature Show. For tickets, call (310) 434-3000

SMC’s Digistar II planetarium projector recreates the celestial wonders of the ever-changing night sky in a 50-minute “The Night Sky” is updated weekly with the latest news in space exploration and astronomy. Bring the whole family to "tour" the constellations and ask questions about anything related to astronomy. and is presented on the following dates:

Beginning at 8pm: "Summer Deep Sky Wonders" (July 11 and 18), which takes a look at the celestial gems, many of them far beyond our solar system, that can be seen in summer. The show will cover star birth and death, the raw material of planetary formation, mature stars in tight spheres and loose associations, and countless distant galaxies, each with billions of suns.

In the turmoil of the Vietnam War, an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fall in love, then are separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other ends in tragedy for her and a fighting chance for the child he never knew he had. Miss Saigon is a testament to the human spirit and in indictment of war’s tragedies. Lyrics by Alain Boubil and Richard Maltby, Jr. Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Applications for Senior Exemptions for SMMUSD Parcel Tax


The voters of Santa Monica and Malibu approved the Measure R parcel tax which combines and replaces the previous Measures Y and S parcel taxes and allows those senior citizens who qualify to be exempted from the entire amount of $346.00 per parcel if they:
  • Are 65 years old by June 30
  • Own and occupy their property as their primary residence
  • Annually apply for exemption

Seniors who applied for & received the exemption will be sent a 2008-09 renewal form in May which needs to be completed, signed & returned by July 31, 2008.

First-time applicants may:
