Santa Monica, a Lifelong Learning Community

Lifelong Learning Community News - December 2005...

Before directing you to the Lifelong Learning Community Calendar which is chock full of interesting events and holiday cheer, there are a few "must mention" lifelong learning community developments:

Remember November 8th? Public schools dodged a bullet by defeating Prop 76 in the November 8th Special Election. Statewide, 62% of voters opposed Prop 76. Here in Santa Monica, it was defeated by a whopping 77.6% of those voting. Whew. Thank you. And congratulations.

Congratulations also to Sylvia Anderle, children's and Latino outreach librarian at the Fairview Branch Library. Ms. Anderle  has been honored for "outstanding public service" by the 2005 New York Times Librarian Awards. Virginia Avenue Park Grand Opening Festival
Sunday, December 4th, 12 - 4 p.m.
At last! Celebrate Virginia Avenue Park's grand opening with food, fun & entertainment for all. Please call (310) 458-8688 or go to http://santa-monica.org/hsd/VAP.htm for more information, including information on park programming scheduled for December and how to enroll.

We have new leadership at the top:
Having served Santa Monica for 24 years including the past 6 years as City Manager, Susan McCarthy is retiring effective December 8th, and the City Council has appointed P. Lamont Ewell, currently City Manager of San Diego, as Santa Monica's new City Manager. Assistant City Manager Gordon Anderson will take over until Ewell comes on board on January 16th. Ms. McCarthy is a Santa Monica resident so hopefully she will now have the time to enjoy some of the benefits of living in this remarkable community which she has been so instrumental in shaping.
Meanwhile, the SMC Board of Trustees has narrowed the field for a new Superintendent and President to three finalists and should be announcing their choice in early December.

Next Steps in updating the City's Land Use and Circulation Elements:
Planning Commission meeting, Wednesday, December 7, 7pm and then
City Council meeting, Tuesday, December 13, 6:45pm
City Council Chambers, City Hall
The Planning and Community Development Department is preparing alternative scenarios for the community's consideration in formulating draft Land Use and Circulation Elements. For information on the process and reports-to-date, go to www.shapethefuture2025.net for the Land Use Element and to http://motion.santa-monica.org for the Circulation. Please see the LLC Calendar listing for more information including the links for agendas and staff reports.

And speaking of the LLC Calendar, please be sure to check it out. There are many, many lifelong learning events and celebrations this December. Calendar listings are posted at http://smllc.org/calendar.html. Please be sure to check the calendar now and throughout the month.
